We engage in lobbying, educate the community, and organize supporters as we seek to end pre-trial detention and stop the harms of the immigration system in Minnesota.
About Minnesota Freedom Fund Action
Creating Lasting, Systemic Transformation
Minnesota Freedom Fund has freed thousands of people since its founding, and we work daily to reduce the harms of discriminatory, coercive, and oppressive jailing. But reducing these harms is not enough. That’s why we created Minnesota Freedom Fund Action to lobby for lasting, systemic transformation in the pretrial and immigration systems.
Accountability to Community
The trust of our community is essential to our work. We are committed to remaining accountable to the communities we serve as well as our supporters, donors, and partners, and we work to empower local organizations across our state.
Abolishing Systems Intended to Harm
We believe that the criminal legal system and immigration detention system were designed to maintain and uphold white supremacy while prioritizing the wealth, power, and influence of the few at the expense of the many.
Intersectional Racial Equity
We are mindful of the interlocking oppressions that face the people we serve, especially Black, brown, and Indigenous people who are subject to disproportionate rates of arrest, higher bails, harsher sentences, and other institutional abuses.

Pretrial Data
Transparency Act
HF 1775 / SF 1908
Improve the transparency of Minnesota’s pretrial system by requiring the collection, analysis, and public reporting of pretrial data from around the state.
Intentional Release & Detain
Establishes a statewide pretrial system that eliminates cash bail and reinforces the presumption of liberty by making sure people are jailed before trial only when truly necessary for safety or court appearance, not because they cannot afford to pay.
End Slavery in Minnesota
Ending prison slavery positions Minnesota as a national leader in fairness, accountability, and second chances — creating a system that supports families, respects human dignity, and promotes safer communities for everyone.
Justice for All
As a member of the Justice For All Coalition, Minnesota Freedom Fund supports all Justice for All recommended bills to bring about a safer and fairer Minnesota.
Larry R. Hill Medical Reform Act
HF 264
Protect the health and safety of people in Minnesota jails by requiring that all people receive their prescribed medication while incarcerated.
STAR Act
The STAR Act makes Minnesotans safer by protecting schools, healthcare providers and courts from intrusion by immigration enforcement agents without a signed judicial warrant and clear identification.
