Job Summary
Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF) is seeking a short-term Web Platform Consultant to support three related digital infrastructure projects. This consultant will help stabilize and prepare the backend of MFF’s primary website and advise on the backend architecture for a new website that will support programmatic activities, as well as prepare for the initial technical setup of a new website for a larger coalition we are a part of.
This is a time-limited consulting role focused on assessment, cleanup, and future-state design, not ongoing content management.

Project Scope
Project 1: Website Backend Stabilization and Readiness
- Audit the current WordPress installation, database structure, and plugin ecosystem.
- Identify and resolve legacy technical issues (e.g., outdated database structures, excessive PII storage, plugin sprawl).
- Implement safe cleanup of sensitive data (client and form submission records).
- Review site security and implement improvements appropriate for a nonprofit handling sensitive information.
- Prepare the site to support near-term needs, including intake for client applications for pilot programs launching in early 2025.
- Collaborate with communications staff to ensure backend decisions support upcoming navigation and design updates that align with existing work.
Deliverables may include:
- A brief audit summary.
- Implemented backend fixes and cleanups (as agreed).
- Clear documentation of changes and remaining risks.
Project 2: New Website Backend Architecture
- Advise on backend architecture for a new website.
Design a high-level approach for:
- volunteer data intake
- secure submissions
- role-based access
- data separation between public content and sensitive information
- Recommend appropriate tools, platforms, or integrations, with attention to sustainability and nonprofit capacity.
- Produce documentation that can guide future development work.
This phase is focused on planning and architecture, with potential for larger product build-out execution.
Project 3: Coalition Website Setup
- Advise on and assist with securing a new domain.
- Set up basic hosting and environment configuration appropriate for a small, public-facing site.
- Implement a simple, maintainable site structure based on an existing content outline.
Configure a basic “Contact Us” form that:
- routes submissions securely
- minimizes storage of sensitive data
- aligns with MFF’s data handling and security practices
- Ensure the site is easy for non-technical staff to maintain after launch.
- Provide brief documentation on domain management, hosting, and form handling for internal use.
Deliverables may include:
- A live or staging-ready Coalition website with core pages in place.
- A functioning contact form with clearly defined data handling behavior.
Qualifications
- Strong experience with WordPress beyond theming (database, plugins, security, performance).
- Comfort working directly with MySQL / WordPress data structures.
- Experience handling sensitive or regulated data in nonprofit, civic, or public-interest contexts.
- Ability to work collaboratively with non-technical staff and explain tradeoffs clearly.
- Experience auditing and untangling legacy websites.
- Ability to meet periodically in person within the Twin Cities.
Preferred
- Experience with civic tech, volunteer platforms, or data governance.
