Visual Communications Consultant

Job Summary 

Minnesota Freedom Fund (MFF) is seeking a Visual Communications Consultant to support a range of design-heavy initiatives during a period of organizational transition and growth. This consultant will work closely with MFF’s Communications, Advocacy, and Development teams to strengthen the organization’s visual infrastructure, improve accessibility and consistency across platforms, and support community-facing and movement-building work.

This role is expected to prioritize systems-building, reusable design assets, and scalable visual tools that support staff across departments.

Project Scope

The consultant will support projects across multiple tiers of priority, with the understanding that timelines and sequencing may evolve based on organizational needs and capacity.

Tier 1: Core Visual Infrastructure (Highest Priority)

  • Develop a comprehensive, branded template system for broad organizational use, designed for accessibility and ease of use by non-design staff.
  • Refine and standardize social media visual assets, including updates to existing templates and creation of new reusable formats.
  • Design and prepare digital assets to support upcoming website launches and updates across multiple organizational entities.
  • Create a lightweight visual usage guide to support consistent application of templates and assets across teams.

Tier 2: Advocacy & Movement Materials (High Priority)

  • Design large-format educational and informational materials intended for community use, training, or public distribution, designed to ensure that the materials are flexible enough to be translated into several languages.
  • Develop branded visual legislative and policy-facing materials, including leave-behinds and educational documents.
  • Create coalition and other partner-facing visual materials that communicate shared goals, context, and vision.
  • Develop rapid-response visual assets for time-sensitive advocacy or public engagement moments.

Tier 3: Community Education & Access Materials (Medium–High Priority)

  • Design support for community-facing educational materials, including guides, zines, and informational handouts.
  • Visual development of accessible learning tools for use in immigration-related or civic education programming.
  • Create modular, adaptable materials suitable for partner distribution.

Tier 4: Brand Systems & Internal Tools (Medium Priority)

  • Develop and refine a cohesive iconography system for use across print, web, and digital materials.
  • Create presentation and document templates for internal and external use, including locked brand elements.
  • Design newsletter-ready visual assets, including banners, dividers, and infographics.

Tier 5: Community Visibility & Development Materials (Lower Priority)

  • Design branded merchandise and physical materials for community engagement or events.
  • Create development-facing print materials, such as donor-facing collateral or stewardship pieces.
Deliverables & Expectations
  • High-quality visual assets aligned with MFF’s mission, values, and evolving brand identity
  • Files delivered in formats accessible to non-design staff, including Canva-compatible templates where appropriate
  • Clear organization and documentation of assets to support long-term use
  • Collaboration with internal staff to ensure designs are practical, accessible, and adaptable
Qualifications
  • Strong background in visual design for mission-driven or community-based organizations
  • Experience designing systems, templates, and reusable assets
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite; experience translating designs into Canva is strongly preferred
  • Understanding of accessibility best practices in visual communication
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams and respond to evolving priorities
Preferred
  • Experience with civic tech, volunteer platforms, or data governance.
Compensation
  • Commensurate with experience and scope
