Job Summary

We are seeking an Immigration Staff Attorney. The Immigration Staff Attorney will work with the Managing Attorney to support the Legal Advocacy Program. The Immigration Staff Attorney will provide client-centered, limited legal representation by assisting clients with asylum, DACA, and naturalization matters. The Immigration Attorney will also work collaboratively with other departments, including the policy, communications, and post-release departments to further MFF’s mission. The Immigration Staff Attorney will also provide guidance and support to any legal interns.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare, review, and file a wide range of immigration filings including petitions and applications for visas, green cards, and citizenship
  • Provide limited legal representation to assist clients in immigration matters
  • Conduct legal research on case law and stay current with changes in immigration laws, regulations, and policies
  • Communicate with clients regularly to update them on their case status and prepare them for interviews
  • Works with various state, municipal, and federal officials, and their attorneys to resolve issues informally, as appropriate
  • Engage in public speaking and news media interviews to articulate Minnesota Freedom Fund’s views on a broad range of issues, in consultation with and by approval of the Executive Directors
  • Support the Policy Director and Managing Attorney on legislative, local, and statewide policy issues
  • Monitor changes in immigration law and advise clients accordingly
  • Develop strategies to resolve immigration-related concerns
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws and regulations
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of immigration law and trends
  • Other duties as assigned by the Managing Attorney
Minimum Qualifications
  • A Juris Doctorate degree from an ABA-accredited law school
  • Minnesota bar admission, or the ability to get admitted in Minnesota within 6 months.
  • At least 2-3 years of experience practicing in immigration law
  • Knowledgeable of immigration law, statutes, practices, and procedures
  • Ability to work with clients from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to handle multiple cases simultaneously
  • Excellent research, writing, and analytical skills
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and communication skills
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines
Preferred
  • Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, Amharic, Karen, Arabic, or other languages
  • Experience supporting trial preparation, hearings, or client interviews
Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $85,000 annually
