Minnesota Freedom Fund is devastated and outraged by the killing of Renee Nicole Good during an ICE enforcement encounter. Renee was a community member and mother who should still be alive today, and we are demanding that those involved in her death be held accountable, along with the systems that allowed this killing to happen.
Her death is not only a tragedy, it’s a warning.
When any system is allowed to operate with unchecked authority, minimal oversight, and limited public accountability, harm becomes inevitable. Whether the power exercised is federal, state, or local, the result is the same: Human lives are put at risk, constitutional rights are violated, and accountability is deferred or denied.
This killing and other acts of ICE aggression expose the danger of systems that respond to scrutiny with force instead of transparency. They threaten the public’s right to observe, document, and challenge government action — and signal what happens when oversight is treated as optional rather than essential.
This is precisely why Minnesota Freedom Fund launched the Free Campaign.
Free the People means ending systems that criminalize communities and wield power without restraint or accountability.
Free the Courts means refusing to allow institutions to shield themselves through closed investigations, internal reviews, or procedural delay when harm occurs.
Free the Vote means ensuring impacted communities have real power over the systems that govern their lives, so decisions that risk lives are not made without consent or consequence.
Renee Good’s death demands more than condolences, and certainly more than the false narratives we’ve heard from some authorities — put out almost immediately and presented as conclusive before any investigation into the killing.
We must demand accountability and structural change, and we cannot allow the federal government to move forward with its proposal to have the FBI lead the investigation into the killing alone. Without a concurrent and unimpeded investigation from Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, we cannot ensure accountability.
Now and moving forward, we call for:
- Independent, transparent investigations whenever state or federal power results in loss of life.
- Public disclosure of policies, practices, and decision-making that lead to harm.
- Real consequences when constitutional rights or human rights are violated.
- Meaningful oversight and limits on enforcement systems that operate without public accountability.
We will honor Renee Good by continuing to demand a future where no agency, institution, or system is allowed to operate above the law or beyond accountability.
